Deobandi Fatwa:

"In the book "al Maqasid al Hasanah Fil Hadisil Atwirah Alas Sunnah".

"Dailmi reports that Hadrat Abu Bakr Siddique Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anho once said 'When I heard the Muazzin say Ash'hadu anna Muharnrnadar-Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam, I said the same, kissed the inner-side of my Kalima finger and placed it on my eyes. When the Holy Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam noticed this, he said. My intercession becomes obligatory upon he who does the same as my beloved.'

This Hadith hasn't reached the classification of Sahih."
[al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut - Lebenon), Page 384]"

Answer: Salam 'alaykum wr wb.

The Barelwi gives the above quotation from Maqaasid al Hasana.

As you can see the Arabic, Sakhawi's opinion is Wa La Yasihh.

The Barelwi translates it as "This Hadith hasn't reached the classification of Sahih".

This is gross misrepresentation. See what a Shafi'i called Gibril Haddad has to write about the use of La Yasihh in Hadith gradings and discussions:

"Similarly, al-Qari understands la yath but to mean la asla lahu when it means la yasihh. In a fiqhi discussion la yathbut and la yasihh mean that the hadith falls short of the rank of sahih but in a hadithic discussion of forgeries such terms mean the hadith is forged.

He follows al-Zarkashi, Ibn 'Arraq, and others in their misunderstanding of the term “inauthentic” (la yasihh) to allow that a hadith is not necessarily forged whereas in discussions of forgeries and strictly hadithic, non-fiqh literature that term is strictly synonymous with “forged,” “baseless,” and other such descriptions used by the Masters in the books specifically devoted to forgeries as demonstrated by Abu Ghudda in his introduction to the Masnoo' and elsewhere.

In the entry, “Whoever circumambulates this House seven times, prays two rakas behind the Station of Ibrahim, and drinks Zamzam water, all his sins shall be forgiven as many as they may be” al-Qari cites al-Sakhawi's ruling of la yasihh, i.e. forged, but al-Qari goes on, Al-Sakhawi’s statement that the hadith is inauthentic does not preclude its being weak or fair unless he meant to convey that it is unestablished (la yathbutu). It seems al-Minnawfi understood the latter since he says, in his Mukhtasar [of al-Sakhawi's Maqasidd], It is a falsehood (batil) without basis (la asla lahu).”

In reality both al-Sakhawi and al-Minnawfi are asserting the same thing, namely, that the hadith is forged[but al-Qari follows two of his idiosyncrasies:

first, he misunderstands al-Sakhawi’s statement to mean other than “forged”;
second, he uses the terms “unestablished” and “without basis” indifferently.

In the light of the above discussion which shows what the masters of hadith actually mean regarding the work
La Yasihh in hadith discussions, read the following fatwa by true scholars:

Nabi (S.A.W.) says, “The actual miser is he in whose presence my name is taken, yet he does not recite Salaat upon me.”
This Saheeh Hadith and many others of its nature teach us to send salutations upon our beloved Nabi (S.A.W.) when his name is taken.
Kissing the thumbs on hearing the name of Nabi (S.A.W.) is an outright innovation. All narrations in this regard are fabricated.

Hope there is clarity to the issue now and Sayyiduna Abi Bakr is absolved of what he did not do. Wasalam."

Deobandi ^Fabrication
on Kissing Thumbs
And rubbing them on the eyes during the Athan (call to prayer) when hearing the blessed name of
The Holy Prophet Muhammad

Deobandi said:

"Allmah Suyuti [rahmatullah alayh] states:

Those Ahadith which have been narrated regarding kissing the fingers and rubbing them on the eyes during the Athan when hearing the blessed name [sallallahu alaihi wasallam], are all maudoo [fabricated]’”

[Tayserul Maqaal Al-Suyuti, page 123—1973 edition] "

^The Fabricated reference to Imam Suyuti was given by A deobandi from India , many decades back and it has been used since.

The Sunni scholars caught that reference from a non existing book of Imam Suyuti long back and deobandis were made to run when just asked to show that book?

The book does not exist and this is an example of another fabrication by Deobandis where they fabricate a book , then fabricate a quote from that non existing book!

Everything which is not sahih does not become mawdu by default.

This is what Imam Sakhawi (rh) said on this….

Proof:

---

---

He uses the word " la sahih" which does not mean , mawdu

Imam of deobandi ,
Mawalan Nawyeli who said that this hadith is mawdu and he attributed to reference to Imam Suyuti.

Mawlana Mohammed Hussein Nelwee al deobandi (Sargodha, Punjab, Pakistan)
student of

Hussein ali (b.1283AH- d.1326AH)(1866CE-1908CE), author of Tafseer Bulghutul Hairaan) writes in his book:

Khairul kalaam fee takbeelal abhaam”
“
Hazrat Imam Sakhawi has called this hadith as Fabricated”.

^Another deobandi lie to call this hadith as mawdu

Imam Sakhawi did not call this hadith as “ mawdu”.

This was a ^brain child of deobandi scholar!

Same Deobandi scholar continues and writes:

Quote:

“ Famous Muhaddith Hazrat Hataab (rh ) has also called this hadith as “ mawdu”.

^Another lie by deobandi scholar!

Imam al Hattab ( rh) ( died 954 AH-1547 CE) in his work Mawahabul jaleel sharah mukhtasar khaleel fi furu al fiqh maliki says: “ LA SAHIH

Mawlana Abul Qasim rafeeq dilawari (died 1379AH-1960 CE, student of Mawalana Hussein deobandi writes in his book “ Umaduddeen” that to do this action is a biddah. All the hadith on this topic are fabricated”

Mawalan safadr al deobandi says:
“ if these people have so much love with the name of prophet , then they should kiss the mouth of the muezzin who is proclaiming adhan……”

Mawlana Safadr al deobandi then gives the same fabricated reference and says: Imam Suyuti has called all the hadith on the topic of kissing thumbs as mawdu”
( Rahe sunnat , by mawlana Safdar , page 242-243)

---

The first person to ascribe a lie towards
Imam Suyuti (rd ) was
 Mawalan Basheruddin Qanawji
 ( d.1234 AH-1818CE)

^This man wrote a book
basaratul aynaynand in that he mentioned a book of Imam Suyuti with the name: " Taysarul Maqaal".
He then fabricated a statement and attributed it to the “ non existing” book of Imam Suyuti (rh)
---
Mawlana Nazeer Hussein Dehalvee ( the wahabi leader in India) uses the same non existing reference and says that"Imam Suyuti called this hadith as Mawdu
(Fatwa Nazeeriya )"
---

Mulla Ali Qari (rh) writes in his Maudhuate Kabir:"when the rafaa'a (ascent) is proved upto Hazrat Siddiq Akbar rd then it is sufficient for practice since the holy Prophet ( sal allahu alaihi wa sallam ) has said that this is essential for you to practice my sunnah and that of my honourable righteous caliphs as well".

Allama Tahtawi writes:
"And such type of Hadiths are practiced upon in regard to " Fazail".
(Tahtavi - Alal Miraqi, Istanbul , page 111)

---

Imam Tahtawi al Hanafi (rah) says:

Translation: Imam Qahstani (rah) narrates in his book Kanz al Ibaad:

“IT IS RECOMMENDED (يستحب)” upon hearing the first testification upon Prophet (Peace be upon him) and say: Salalahu Alayka Ya Rusul Allah and upon hearing the second time say: Qurrato ‘Aini Bika Ya RasoolAllah Allahuma Matti’ni Bis Sam’i Wal Basari and then one should kiss his thumbs, the Prophet will take such a person to Jannah

It is narrated by Daylami in his Musnad al Firdaws the hadith of Abu Bakr (ra) in Marfu form that when you hear the Muadhin saying “أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله” then you should kiss your thumbs and rub them on your eyes. (The Prophet) said: Whosoever does like my Khalil (i.e. Abu Bakr) did then he will receive my Shaf’at. Similar to it has been narrated in narration of Khidr (a.s) and “(THESE HADITHS) ARE FOLLOWED IN FADHAIL” [Imam Tahtawi in Sharh Miraqih al Falah (1/110)]

Imam Ibn Abideen ash-Shami (rah) also declared this Amal as “MUSTAHAB” [Hashiya Radd ul Muhtar ala Dur ul Mukhtar, Volume No. 1, Page No. 428, Published by Dar ul Fikr, Beirut, Lebanon]

Tafsir Ruh ul Bayan states:

Translation: It is narrated in books regarding stories of Prophets that when Adam (a.s) had the desire to meet Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) in Jannah, at that point Allah sent a Wahi to him that he (Prophet Muhammad Peace be upon him) will be appointed as Last Prophet from his pregony. When Adam (a.s) desired to see him then Allah made the Nur of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) appear in the right index finger of Adam (a.s) and this Nur praised Allah, this is why the index finger is also called the finger of testification as is mentioned in (book) Roudh al Fa’iq. Allah made the beauty of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) appear as a mirror in both the nails of his thumb, upon seeing that Adam (a.s) kissed them and rubbed them on his eyes and “THUS THIS SUNNAH WAS ESTABLISHED IN HIS DECENDANTS” and when Jibreel (a.s) informed Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) regarding this, he said: Whenever anyone of you hears my name during Adhaan then he should kiss his thumbs and put them on his eyes, doing so will never make him blind. Imam Sakhawi (rah) said in his Al-Maqasid al-Hassana that this hadith is not Sahih in the Marfuh form [Tafsir Ruh ul Bayaan (11/107)]

Imam Sakhawi says:

Translation: It is narrated by Daylami in his book al-Firdaws, the hadith from Abu Bakr (ra) that when you hear the Muadhin say “أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله” then you should kiss your thumbs and rub them on your eyes. (The Prophet) said: Whosoever does like my Khalil (i.e. Abu Bakr) did then he will receive my Shaf’at. It is not Sahih.

Then he says:

It is narrated from Imam Shams Muhammad bin Salah al-Madni “THE IMAM AND KHATIB” in his book of Tarikh who says that I heard Hadrat Majd Misri, “ONE OF THE GREAT SAINTS OF HIS TIME” say: “Whoever hears the blessed name of the prophet in Azan and, joining the index fingers with the thumbs, kisses them and then rub them over the eyes his eyes will never hurt”. (Al-Maqasidul Hasanah Fi al-Ahadith al-Da’irati ‘Ala al-Sunnah)

Then he says:

Imam Sakhwi quotes again from Tareekh of Imam Shams Muhammad Bin Salah Madani who says; “I heard like of it from “FAQIH” Muhammad bin Zarnadi (rah) and some “SHAYOOKH OF IRAQ AND AJAM” that one should kiss his eyes and say: “Sallaho alaika Ya Sayyidi Ya Rusul Allah, Ya Habibi Qalbi Sallaho Alaika Ya Sayyidi Ya RasoolAllah Ya Habiba Qalbi Ya Nura Basari wa-Ya Qurrat’ Aayni” Then his eyes will never incur pain”. Imam Ibn Salah said: By Allah I heard this and started acting upon it and up and until today I have never complained about my eyes and they would Insha Allah never cause me pain.( Imam Sakhawi in al-Maqasid ul Hassana, Volume No.1, Page No. 140]

Then he narrates from Imam Hassan (ra)

Translation: Imam Sakhawi narrates from Faqih Muhammad bin Sa’eed Khulani who heard from the Faqih of world Abul Hassan Ali bin Muhammad bin Hadid al Hussayni who heard from the Faqih and Zahid al-Bilali that Hadrat Imam Hasan RadiAllaho Anhu states: “Who ever when hearing the Muazzin recite Ashhadu Anna Muhammadar Rasoolullah says Marhaban Bi Habibi wa Qurratu ‘Aini Muhammad-ibni Abdillah. Then kisses both the thumbs and rubs them over his eyes then never will he become blind nor will his eyes hurt”. [ibid]

Imam Sakhawi after proving all this said that these ahadith are not Sahih in Marfu form, this quote has been hypocritically used by envy doers although Imam Sakhawi has proven this act to be Mujarib (i.e. acted upon by Muhaditheen and Mashaikh)

Imam al Ajluni (rah) says in his Kashf al Khafa:

Translation: It is narrated by Daylami from Abu Bakr (ra) that when you hear the Muadhin saying “أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله” then you should kiss your thumbs and (index) fingers and rub them on your eyes. (The Prophet) said: Whosoever does like my Khalil (i.e. Abu Bakr) did then my Shaf’at will become halal upon him.

Imam Sakhawi says in his Al-Maqasid: This is not Sahih (in Marfu form), whereas Mullah Ali Qari (rah) said: When the raising of this hadith is proven till Al-Sadeeq (ra) “THEN IT IS ENOUGH TO FOLLOW IT” because the Prophet (Peace be upon him) told to follow his Sunnah and “THAT OF KHULAFA AR RASHIDEEN” [Imam al-Ajluni in Kashf al Khafa under Hadith # 2296, Published by Dar ul Kutb al-iLmiyyah]

Even the deobandi authority Mufti Taqi Uthmani said:

Upon listening to the Adhan in the Masjid, you heard the words “Ashhadu Anna Muhammad al-Rasul Allah” you suddenly felt a deep sense of love for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) and in this state of love and ecstasy you kissed your thumbs and placed them on your eyes. This action, in of itself, cannot be considered sinful or Bid’a. The reason being is that you did this out of love for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace), and love and respect for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) is a praiseworthy act and a sign of faith….” (Islahi Khutbat (Urdu), 1/231)

Kissing of the Thumbs Taqbil-e Ibhāmain

Taz’im-e Rasulullah

A true Muslim always carries out orders of Allah Almighty.
The following verse of the Qur’an commands us to pay due respect to the Beloved Messenger of Allah

So you believe in Allah and His Rasūl and honour him. Sharī’āh disseminates the concept of Taz’im-e Rasūlullah

It is stated in Fath Ul-Qadīr Sharh Hidāyah and [Fatāwah] Alamgīrī that:
Those deeds, which are intended for respect or honour, are liked.

For centuries it is a customary to perform the Taqbīl- e - Ibhāmain in affection on hearing the name of Sayyiduna Rasūlullah

The Munafiqin of the recent era, dislike Taz’im-e Rasulullah

The exasperated Munafiqin of the recent era, state that this mustahab deed [of Taqbīl-e Ibhāmain] is a bid’ah [innovation] and preclude thus system of showing affection towards Rasūlullah şallAllāhu álayhi wa sallam. The sole objective behind branding this deed as bid’ah is to prevent us from paying due respect on hearing the name of our Beloved Prophet

Taqbīl-e Ibhāmain is mustahab, lawful and commendable.
Sayyidunā Abū Bakr as-Siddīq used to practice Taqbīl-e Ibhāmain

Imām al-Daylamī has written is his book, Musnad al-Firdaus that Amīr Ul-Mu’minīn Sayyidunā Abū Bakr as-Siddīq recited the following dū’ā on hearing:

I bear witness that Muhammad is the Prophet of Allāh, in the ad’hān: I bear witness that Muhammad [şallAllāhu álayhi wa sallam] is the devotee and Prophet of Allah Almighty, I am blissful that my Rabb is Allah Almighty, my religion is Islām and Nabi is Muhammad [şallAllāhu álayhi wa sallam]. And then he touched both thumbs and inner surface of both index fingers on to his lips followed by brandishing them over the eyes. On this, the Beloved Prophet şallAllāhu álayhi wa sallam said,Whosoever practices this as my loving [friend] has done, will legitimize my intercession.

Imam al-Ajal ‘Allama ‘Ali ibn Sultan Harvi Qari [d. 1014] famously known as Mullah Ali Qari has written in his book Mawdū’at al-Kabir concerning the kissing of the thumbs: When a link has been proven up to Sayyidunā Abū Bakr as-Siddīq then it is [more than] enough for one to practice this, since the Beloved Messenger of Allah şallAllāhu álayhi wa sallam has said that it is essential for you to practice my Sunnah and that of my honourable righteous Caliphs.

Another ^Deobandi Fatwa:

"Kissing the thumbs upon hearing prophet (s.a.w) name during azaan

Question:

A friend of mine has told me that it is permissible to kiss the thumbs upon hearing the name of prophet s.a.w during azaan. I would like to know is it permissible. Also he told me a hadith regarding this. IN A HADITH THE HOLY PROPHET (SAW) HAS STATED: ?any person who hears my name in the azaan and passes his thumbnails over his eyes, i shall search out that person from the rows of poeple on judgement and lead him into jannah behind me"

Answer: 10797

Your Aqaaid of having utmost respect for Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] is correct.
However, it should be borne in mind that Nabi [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] is the prophet of Allah. Allah is the Creator, Nourisher and Cherisher.

A Nabi [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] too is bound by the laws of Almighty Allah Ta?ala and has to express submission and subjugation to Allah Ta?ala.

Nabi [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] himself said, ?I am but just a humble slave of Allah?.

Nowadays, there are those who surpass the limits of respect with the result of elevating the status of Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] to the status of Allah.

Nabi [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] said, ?Do not exaggerate in my praises as the Christians exaggerated in the praises of Eesa [alayhis salaam], thus, raising him to the position of God.?

Respect for Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] dictates emulating histeachings. It would be disrespectful to do anything against the Sunnah of Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam].

Kissing the thumbs upon hearing the name of Rasulullah [sallallaahu alayhi wasallam] has no basis in Shari?ah. To carry out such an act as a Sunnah is bid?ah and sin. and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best, Mufti Ebrahim DesaiHere

^Hold On You Forgot:

Quote:

“The great contemporary scholar Shaykh ^Taqi Usmani (Allah have mercy on him) also mentions the non-offensiveness of this act in his “Discourses of Islamic Way of Life” thus he states:

“ Upon listening to the Adhan in the Masjid, you heard the words “Ashhadu Anna Muhammad al-Rasul Allah” you suddenly felt a deep sense of love for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) and in this state of love and ecstasy you kissed your thumbs and placed them on your eyes.

This action, in of itself, cannot be considered sinful or Bid’a. The reason being is that you did this out of love for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace), and love and respect for the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) is a praiseworthy act and a sign of faith….”

(Islahi Khutbat (Urdu), 1/231)

The above statement from one of the renowned scholars of the Deobandi School clearly shows that the act of kissing one’s thumbs and placing them upon the eyes during Adhan is not, in of itself, an act of innovation.
Those who categorically condemn this practice altogether should realize that it is not a baseless act that was invented by some Muslims in the Indian Subcontinent. It is something that is practiced in other parts of the Muslim and Arab world also, such as in Syria and Yemen. If one was to visit the famous city of Syria Halab (Aleppo), one would see many Arab Muslims including scholars kissing their thumbs and placing them on their eyes upon hearing the name of the Messenger of Allah (Allah bless him & give him peace) during the Adhan.” Read Here

Quote: Wahhabi Fataw No.21373

Kissing one’s thumbs when the name of the Prophet is mentioned is a bid’ah
Praise be to Allaah.
As far as we know, there is no saheeh report from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) that when the muezzin says “Ashhadu anna Muhammadan Rasool-Allaah” we should kiss our thumbs, so doing so is a bid’ah (innovation). But it was proven that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, “Whoever innovates something in this matter of ours that is not part of it will have it rejected.” And Allaah is the Source of strength. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad.

Permissibility of Kissing of the thumbs

during Azan (Adhan)

It is stated in the book, Salaat al-Mas'oodi:

روي عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم انه قال من سمع اسمي في الاذان ووضع ابھاميه على عينيه فانا طالبه في صفوف القيمه و قائده الى الجنه

''The Noble Messenger is reported to have said, "On the Day of Qiyaamat, I shall search for the person who used to place his thumbs on his eyes when hearing my name during the Adhaan. I shall lead him into Jannat." [Salat al-Mas'oodi, Vol 2, Chapter 20]

Allama Ismail Haqqi (rah) writes under the verse 58 of Surah al Maidah,

"Kissing the nails of the thumbs and the shahadat finger when saying "Muhanunadur-Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam has been classified as weak (zaeef) because it is not proven from a marfoo' Hadith. However, Muhadditheen have agreed that to act upon a zaeef Hadith to incline people towards [good] deeds and instill fear within them is permitted."[Tafseer Rooh al-Bayaan, Vol 3, Page 282]

Imam Shaami states:

"On the testimony (of Prophethood) in Adhaan, it is Mustahab to say "Sallallaahu Alaika Ya Rasoolallah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam on the first and "Quratu Aini bika Ya RasoolAllah SubHanuhu wa Ta'ala on the second. Then, place the nails of your thumbs on your eyes and say, "Allahumma Matti'ni bis-Sam'i wal-Basr." The Holy Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam will lead the person who does this into Jannat. The same has been documented by Kanzul lbaad, Qohistaani and in Fataawa Soofia. Kitaabul-Firdaus states that the Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam has said, I shall lead into Jannat the person who kisses his thumbnails when hearing "Ash'hadu anna Muhammad ar-Rasoolullah. I will also place him amongst the ranks of the inmates of Janna'. The complete discussion on this has been given in the marginal notes on Bahr ar-Raaiq of Ramli."  [Radd al Muh'tar, Baab al-Adhan, Vol. 3, Page 233]

This extract has given the reference of 5 books Kanz al-Ibaad, Fataawa Soofia, Kitaab al-Firdaus, Qohistaani and the marginal notes on Bahr ar-Raaiq. All of them have ruled this practice to be Mustahab. In the book "al Maqasid al Hasanah Fil Hadisil Atwirah Alas Sunnah".

Imam Sakhawi states:

"Dailmi reports that Hadrat Abu Bakr Siddique Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anho once said 'When I heard the Muazzin say Ash'hadu anna Muharnrnadar-Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam, I said the same, kissed the inner-side of my Kalima finger and placed it on my eyes. When the Holy Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam noticed this, he said. My intercession becomes obligatory upon he who does the same as my beloved.' This Hadith hasn't reached the classification of Sahih." [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut - Lebenon), Page 384]

Quoting the book Moojibaat ar-RaHmah, Imam Sakhaawi further writes:

"It is reported from Hadrat Khidr Alaihis Salam , "If a person says "Marhaban bi-Habibi Quratu Aini Muhammad ibn Abdullah" when hearing the Muazzin say "Ash'hadu anna Muhammadur-Rasoolullah, then kisses his thumbs and places them on his eyes, never will they (the eyes) be sore." [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut - Lebenon), Page 384]

He further writes that Abul Abbas Ahmad said that Muhammad ibn Baabaa, narrating his personal experience, states:

أنه هبت ريح فوقعت منه حصاة في عينه فأعياه خروجها وآلمته أشد الألم وأنه لما سمع المؤذن يقول أشهد أن محمدا رسول الله قال ذلك فخرجت الحصاة من فوره

"Once, due to a heavy wind blowing, a pebble hit my eye and refused to come out. I experienced major pain because of it." When Muhammad ibn Baabaa heard the Muazzin say "Ash 'hadu anna Muhammad ar-Rasoolullah, " he said this "Quratu Aini ... 'and, immediately, the pebble fell out." [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut - Lebenon), Page 384]

Allama Shams Muhammad ibn Saalih Madani Alaihis Salam reports Imam Amjad to have said:

من صلى على النبي إذا سمع ذكره في الاذان وجمع أصبعيه المسبحة والابهام وقبلهما ومسح بهما عينيه لم يرمد أبدا

"If the person who hears the name of the Noble Messenger SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam in the Adhaan joins his Kalima finger and his thumbs," "Kisses and places them on his eyes, never will they be sore." [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut - Lebenon), Page 384]

Imam Amjad  who was an accomplished scholar in Egypt, further states,

"Some non-Arab and Iraqi Mashaaikh have said that by this practice, the eyes will never be sore." "From the time I have brought this into practice even my eyes have not ached." [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut - Lebenon), Page 384]

Ibn Saalih  states,

"From the time I heard this benefit. I brought this action into practice. Since then, my eyes haven't become sore and it is my hope that, Insha-Allah, they will never be and I will be saved from being blind." [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut - Lebenon), Page 385]

Imam Hasan (RA) states,

''The eyes of he who says 'Marhaban bi-Habibi wa Quratu Aini Muhammad ibn Abdullah' when hearing the Muazzin say "Ash'hadu anna Muhammad ar-Rasoolullah and kisses and places his thumbs on them will never pain nor will he become blind."[al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut - Lebenon), Page 385]

In short, the book al Maqaasid al Hasanah confirms this practice by many Imams of the deen.

Sharah Niqaaya states,

"It should be known that it is preferable (Mustahab) to say "Quratu Aini bika Ya Rasoolallah and place the thumbs on the eyes when hearing the first part of the second shahaadat. The Holy Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam wilt lead the person who does so into Jannat. Kanz al-Ibaad says likewise." [Jami' ar-Rumooz, Fasl al Adhan, Maktaba Islamiya (Iran), Vol 1, Page 125]

Maulana Jamaal ibn Abdullah ibn Umar Makki states in his Fataawa,

"Taqbeelul-Ibhaamain (kissing and placing the thumbs on the eyes when hearing the blessed name of Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam in Adhaan) not just permissible, but Mustahab. Our Mashaaikh have elucidated this.” [Fatawa Jamal Ibn Abdullah Ibn Umar Makki]

Allama Muhammad Taahir classifying this Hadith as Ghair-Sahih, also states,

"There are many reports of this benefit being experienced." [Khatima Majma' BiHar al-Anwaar, Vol 3, Page 511]

Besides the Ulama of the Hanafi Mad'hab,

Ulama from the Shafee and Maaliki Mad'habs have also ruled the kissing of the thumbs (Taqbeel al-Ibhaamain) to be Mustahab.

A famous Shafa'ee book of Fiqh, I'aanatut-Taalibeen 'Alaa Hali alfaazi Fat'hil-Mu'een, states:

ثم يقبل ابھاميه و يجعلھما على عينيه لم يعم ولم يرمد ابدا

"Then kiss and place your thumbs on your eyes. By doing so, never will you become blind nor will your eyes be sore,' [I'aanatut-Taalibeen, Page 247, Egyptian Edition]

Another famous book of the Maaliki Mad'hab, Kifaayat at-Taalib ar Rabbani Ii Risaalati Ibn Abi Zaid Qeerwaani Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anho, after saying much about this practice, states:

عينيه لم يعم ولم يرمد ابدا

"Never will the eyes of the person who does so pain, nor will he become blind." [Kifaayat at-Taalib ar Rabbani, Vol 1, Page 169, Egyptian Edition]

Shaikh Ali Saeed Adawi writes in his commentary of this extract,

"The writer didn't mention when the thumbs should be kissed. However, it is reported that some people met Allama Mufassir Nooruddin Khorasaani Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anho at the time of Adhaan. When he heard the Muazzin say "Ash'hadu anna Muhammad ar-Rasoolullah he kissed and placed his thumbs on the eyelashes and comer of his eyes, right until the temples. He did this on every shahaadat. When the people asked him about this practice of his, he replied, "I used to kiss my thumbs but stopped after a while. My eyes later became sore. I then saw the Holy Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam in a dream and he said to me, "Why did you stop kissing your thumbs and placing them on the eyes during the Adhaan? If you want your eyes to stop paining, resume this practice." Thus, from then on, I continued this action and gained comfort. The pain didn't return from the time I recommenced this." [Nahjul-Istamia, Page 177]

This entire discussion establishes that kissing and placing the thumbs during the Adhaan, etc. is Mustahab. It is found as the Sunnat of' Hadrat Adam Alaihis Salam, Abu Bakr Siddique Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anho and Imam Hasan Radi ALLAHu Ta'ala Anho. Even Imams of the Shafa'ee and Maaliki Mad'habs have ruled it to be Mustahab. In every era, Muslim deemed this practice to have this very ruling, along with the following benefits,

Wahhabi ^Rejects
kissing the thumbs

---

---

The Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, "Whosoever has touched the name Muhammad with his hands, then kissed his hand with his lips and rubbed it on his eyes, then he sill see Allah Ta'ala just as the righteous ones see and my intercession will be close to him even though he is a sinner." (An Nawafi ul Atri'aa)

In Jannat, when Sayyiduna Adam (alaihis salaam) desired to meet the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam), then Allah Ta'ala sent Wahi (revelation) to him, "From your generation, he will become apparent in the later years".

Then Sayyiduna Adam (alaihis salaam) desired from Allah Ta’ala to meet the Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam). Allah Ta’ala showed him the Noor of the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) on the Shahadat finger of his right hand.

The Noor recited the Tasbeeh of Allah Ta'ala. It is for this reason that this finger is known as the Kalima finger.

Allah Ta'ala showed the beauty of the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) on both the thumbnails of Sayyiduna Adam (alaihis salaam) like a mirror. Then, Sayyiduna Adam (alaihis salaam) kissed both his thumbnails and turned them over his eyes. Thus, this Sunnah of Sayyiduna Adam (alaihis salaam) became consistent in his descendants. When Sayyiduna Jibraeel Ameen (alaihis salaam) informed Rasoolullah (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) of this, he said, "That person, who when hearing my name in Azaan, kisses his thumb nails and turns it over his eyes, he shall never go blind." (Tafseer Roohul Bayaan)

Once, the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) entered the Masjid and sat down near a pillar. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddique (radi Allahu anhu) was seated beside him. Sayyiduna Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) then stood up and commenced with the Azaan.

When he said: "Ash hadu Ana Muhammadur Rasoolullah", Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddique (radi Allahu anhu) placed both the thumb nails on to his eyes and said "Qurratu Aini bika Ya Rasoolallah" (Ya Rasoolallah! You are the coolness of my eyes).

When Sayyiduna Bilal (radi Allahu anhu) completed the Azaan, the Holy Prophet (sallal laahu alaihi wasallam) said, "O Abu Bakr! Whosoever does like you have done, Almighty Allah will forgive all his sins." (Tafseer Roohul Bayaan)

Why Do We Kiss the Thumbs when We Hear the Name of Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم in the Adhan?

Shaykh Hisham Kabbani

Watch video:  Here

---

"In the book "al Maqasid al Hasanah Fil Hadisil Atwirah Alas Sunnah"

"Dailmi reports that Hadrat Abu Bakr Siddique (RA) once said 'When I heard the Muazzin say Ash'hadu anna Muharnrnadar-Rasoolullah SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam, I said the same, kissed the inner-side of my Kalima finger and placed it on my eyes. When the Holy Prophet SallAllaho Alaihi wa Sallam noticed this, he said. My intercession becomes obligatory upon he who does the same as my beloved.' This Hadith hasn't reached the classification of Sahih." [al Maqasid al Hasanah, Hadit 1021, Dar al Kutb Ilmiyah (Berut - Lebenon), Page 384]"

It is in Hadith - It is narrated that whenever he (Abu Bakr Siddique -رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) heard the Mu'addhin say: "I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah", he would repeat this (phrase)  and would kiss the tip of the index fingers (or thumbs) and wipe his eyes. The Prophet  (صلى الله عليه و آله وسلم) said: whosoever does what my friend (Abu Bakr Siddique - رضئ اللہ تعالی عنہ) did, my intercession will come down upon him.

(Ad-Daylamee in Musnadul-Firdaws by way of  Tadhkiratul-Mawdoo’aat - page 36)  and al-Mawdoo’aatul-Kabeer - page-75).

It is the Sunnah of Hadrat Adam (alayhis 'salam)

Hadith by Imam Hanbal

Al-Jawzi Ibn Hajar declares: “Rahma (Allah’s Mercy descends where Our beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) name is mentioned and at this auspicious moment it would be most appropriate to show love for Our Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) by following the way of Prophet Adam (alayhis 'salam) and the Shahaba and kiss the thumbs and rub them on the eyelids.”

It has also been written in Roz- ul faiq that Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) brightened the beauty of Our Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) in nails of both the thumbs of Hadhrat Adam (alayhis 'salam) like mirrors who in turn then kissed the nails of both the thumbs and rubbed on his eyes, after Allah (Subhanahu wa Ta'ala) forgave him in the name of Muhammad (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) “

Hence this deed of Hadhrat Adam (alayhis 'salam) Continued to be observed amongst his children. Rooh- ul-Bayan states: When Jibril (AS) informed Our Beloved Prophet (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) of the above, Aap (Salla Allahu ta'ala 'alayhi wa Sallam) replied; “ Whoever upon hearing my name rubs his nails over the eyes having kissed them will never become blind." [Rooh- ul-Bayan, vol 7, p.229]

OBJECTIONS & ANSWERS TO

KISSING THE THUMBS

Note:  when the Sufis/Barelvis  kiss their thumbs and wipe them on their eyes they also recite/send salutations salaat o salaam upon Holy Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم as well

OBJECTION

All the Ahaditb that have been presented in proof of kissing the thumbs are weak (zaeef), and a rule of Shariah cannot be established based on a weak Hadith. Imam Sakhaawi, Imam Mulla Ali Qaari and even Imam Shaami رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ have written in Maqaasid-e-Hasanaa, Mauzuaate-Kabeer and Raddul-Mukhtaar respectively that all of the Ahadith narrated regarding this practice are not Sahib and Marfoo. The author of Tafseer Roohul-Bayaan further rejects them being Sahib. Thus, presenting them is futile.
---

Answer - There are a few replies to this:

1. All of these scholars refute these Ahadith being Marfoo (i.e. they are not Marfoo Sahih), proving that they are Mauqoof Sahih (an acceptable category of Hadith).
As a result, after writing that these Ahadith are not Marfoo,

Mulla Ali Qaari رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ states, "I say that when this Hadith's attribution (rafaa) is proven through Hadrat Siddique-Akbar رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ it is sufficient for practice because Rasoolullahصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم has said) "My Sunnah, as well as that of my Khulafaa, is necessary on you." [2 .16 - MauzuaateKabeer]

This means that the Hadith is Mauqoof Sahih, which is adequate when proving something.

2. All of these scholars have said, ''These Ahadith are not proven to be Marfoo until the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم and are not sound (Sahih),' Not being Sahih however, doesn't necessitate that the Ahadith are weak (zaeef) because the rank of Hasan is still sufficient.

3. It is a rule of Usoole-Fiqh and Usoole-Hadith that if a weak Hadith is narrated through several Chains of Narration, it becomes Hasan. Discussing the duas of the body parts in Wudhu, Allama Haskafi رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ writes, "This Hadith is narrated Ibn Hibban رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ, etc. through various Chains of Narration {isnaad)." 23. 7 - Durre-Mukhtaar, Vol. 1, Baabu Mustahabaatil-Wudhu

Allama Shaami رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ states under this, "Some Chains of Narration strei then others.

Consequently, this Hadith has reached the rank of Hasan." 23

In the first chapter, we have proven that this Hadith is narrated through many chains. Thus, it is Hasan.

4. Even if this Hadith is accepted to be weak still too is a weak Hadith acceptable in excellence of practice.

Allama Shaami رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ writes discussing the instances of Azaan, "To act upon a weak Hadith in connection to excellence of practice is permissible." 23.19 - Raddul-Muhtaar, Vol. 1, Baabul-Azaan

Here too is there no issue of this practice being Waajib, or Haraarn if not done.
The Hadith only speaks of the excellence of kissing the thumbs. Therefore a weak Hadith is sufficient for bringing practice upon. Also, the practice of Muslims strengthens a weak Hadith, Discussing Talqeen (encouraging the recitation of the Kalima) to the deceased.

Imam Nawawi states, "The Hadith about making Talqeen to the deceased does not have a strong Chain of Narration. However, it is strengthened through the practice of the people of Syria and other proofs:' 23.20 - Kitaabul-Azkaar

Refer to the books Noorul-Anwaar, Tanzeeh, etc. for more insight into this rule.

5. Even if there was no Hadith mentioned about this practice, still too is the Muslim Ummah's acceptance of it being preferable (Mustahab) a sufficient proof, because the Hadith states, "Whatever is accepted to be good by Muslims is good in the sight of Allahعزوجل.

Kissing the thumbs is a practice (amal) to save one's self from the sickness of the eyes. The experience of the Sufiya is sufficient in proof of amals.

Shah Waliyullah رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ states, "The path of ijtihaad is open in regard to variant (tasreefi) practices, e.g. doctors making prescriptions." Hawaamia

Shah Waliyullah رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ himself has written several amals and taweezs in his book, Al-Qawlul-Jameel, etc. From which Ahadith are these amals and taweezs proven from for you?

Allama Shaami رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہ has also written many methods and practices concerning being saved from black-magic, finding a lost object, etc. in his book, Raddul-Muhtaar. Where are the Ahadith which substantiate these practices? When we have proven in the first chapter that this kissing of the thumbs is beneficial for the removal of pain from the eyes, why do you still prohibit it?

6. In the previous chapter, we have proven that Shaami, Sharah Naqaayah, Tafseer Roohul-Bayaan, etc. have accepted kissing the thumbs to be Mustahab. It should be understood that they are not criticizing the practice being Mustahab, but are merely refuting the Hadith being Marfoo. This proves that the classification of it being preferable (Mustahab) is absolutely correct.

7. Very well even if we accept that a weak Hadith doesn't prove something being Mustahab, where is the Hadith which proves that this action is Makrooh?

In other words, produce a Hadith which states, "Kissing the thumbs is Makrooh," or "Don't kiss the thumbs," etc.

In sha-Allah, never mind a Sahih Hadith, you will not be able to find even a weak one to prove Dislike.

You only base your stance on the thinking of your friends and enmity of Rasoolullah

---

OBJECTION
Hadrat Adam علیہ السلام kissed the nails of his thumbs because he saw the Noor of Sayyiduna Rasoolullahصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم on them, what Noor do people see that makes them kiss theirs? The reason for this kissing is Dot found here.

---

Answer - When Sayyidah Haajira رضی اللہ تعالٰی عنہا brought her son (Hadrat Ismail ) to the desolate area of Makkah, she ran in search of water between Safaa and Marwa.
Why do you run there during Hajj?
What water are you in search of?
While heading towards the Qurbani, Hadrat Ibrahim علیہ السلام stoned the devil at three places.
Why do you also throw stones there?
Which Shaitaan is deceiving you then?

For a specific need, the Holy Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم strutted (rami) in Tawaaf to demonstrate the power of the Muslims to the Disbelievers.
Why do you still perform ramI in the Tawaaf-e-Qudoom?
Where are the Kaafirs who are supposedly looking at you at that point?

*Some actions of the Prophets become so accepted that their remembrance is kept alive even through the need that spurred them no longer exist. Likewise is this action of Hadrat Adam

---

OBJECTION
Why do you specifically kiss the thumbnails when hearing the Prophet’s Why not kiss something else like the hands, feet, clothes, etc.? What is so special about the nails?

---

Answer - The thumbnails are kissed because they are documented in the narrations.
To search for the reason in specified things is not necessary.
However, if you really want to know why, we shall respond.
Under the ayat, “بدت لھما سو اتھما” 23.22 Tafseer Khaazin and Roohul-Bayaan state that the clothes of Hadrat Adam علیہ السلام in Jannat was made of nails.

In other words, there was a sheet of nails over the entire body which was very soft and beautiful.

When Hadrat Adam علیہ السلام came under the censoring of Allahعزوجل, this sheet was removed, but nails have been kept on the tips of our fingers as a remembrance.

We come to know that nails are the apparel of Jannat. Through the Sadaqah of the Holy Prophetصلی اللہ علیہ وسلم, we shall attain Jannat, and we therefore kiss the heavenly apparel when hearing his name. This is just like how we kiss the Hajar-e-Aswad of the Kaaba. We kiss it because it is heavenly (and do not kiss the rest of the Kaaba).

The Hajar-e-Aswad is the remembrance of the Jannati home which was brought down on the earth for Hadrat Adamعلیہ السلام but was later lifted up during the flood of Hadrat Nuh علیہ السلام. The Hajar-e-Aswad of today is its remembrance.
Likewise, the nails are the remembrance of the clothes of Jannah.

kissing the thumbs... ?

In Radd al Muhtaar it is mentioned:

“(They should comply) because of what is narrated by Imam Hakim that a person came to Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم and said, “O Prophet of Allah, show me a sign so that I can increase my conviction.” Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم (pointed towards a tree) and said, “Go call that tree for me.” The person went to the tree and said, “Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم is calling you.” The tree came and saluted Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم.
Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم ordered it to return to its former place and it returned.

Thereafter, Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم gave this Sahabi permission and he kissed the blessed head and feet of Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم. Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم said, “If I had to command any person to prostrate for another person, I would have commanded a woman to prostrate for her husband. Imam Hakim said that the chain of this narration is authentic”

---
In Tirmidhi, Nasai and Ibn Majah it is narrated from Safwan (May Allah Ta'ala be pleased with him) that a group of Jews kissed both the blessed hands and feet of Nabi Imam Tirmidhi (May Allah Ta'ala have mercy on him) has classified this narration as good.
---
Hakim narrated and authenticated in Al Mustadrak a narration on the authority of Buraidah (May Allah Ta'ala be pleased with him) that a person came to Nabi صلى الله عليه و سلم and kissed his blessed hands and feet.
---
Imam Bukhari (May Allah Ta'ala have mercy on him) narrates in Al-Adab al-mufrad that Suhaib (May Allah Ta'ala be pleased with him) has said, I saw Ali (May Allah Ta'ala be pleased with him) kiss the hands and feet of Abbaas (May Allah Ta'ala be pleased with him).”

Translation: Ahmed bin Hamdan al-Qasaar said that he saw Muslim bin Hajjaj (rah) i.e. Imam Muslim R.A coming in the court of Imam Bukhari (rah) and kissed his forehead, "THEN HE ASKED HIS PERMISSION TO KISS HIS FEET" he then said: O Teacher of Teachers master of traditionalists and grand scholar on hadith weaknesses.

Some people posed this question to Ashraf Ali Thanwi and he responded as follows:
“To interpret something without a proof is not logical. It is also apparent that without the presence of a proof which averts something from its apparent meaning, we cannot take another meaning. Hence, in itself it is permissible to kiss the feet of (a pious) person. The Fuqahah have ruled that it is reprehensible based on an external factor.” (Imdad al fatawa 5/345)
